Mar 2010:
Former offshore professionals at Marrache & Co, the Gibraltar legal and Trust company now subject to a police investigation, are “victims of a situation that was not of their making,” Local Union District Officer Charlie Sisarello declared yesterday.
Speaking to the Chronicle, Mr Sisarello reiterated the Union’s support for the employees some of whom have not received their salaries since January. The Union leader said they are engaged in ongoing discussions with the Gibraltar Employment and Training Board to find a solution to the financial hardship they face.
“They are in a desperate situation,” he declared.
The company is currently in the hands of an administrator.
A Unite the Union spokesman said: “We wish to state that the situation that developed in the firm, and which has become a matter of police investigation, has resulted in over 50 employees losing their permanent jobs, and until proven otherwise, have had no direct or indirect involvement in the dealings of the company. They were just paid employees working for a lawyer’s firm.
“This unfortunate episode has resulted in a large number of employees becoming unemployed. In this scenario the staff has sought our support. The employees, members of our Union, have manifested their gratitude to us for the prompt support they are receiving both in moral and legal terms.
“These persons find themselves in a desperate situation, without an income to address their financial commitment as any other citizen. In a nutshell, they have become the victims of a situation that was not of their making.
“Unite will continue to fully support this group of workers, so that they receive their entitlements, the sooner the better, through the insolvency fund.”
